2010

The morning was crisp and cool with just a hint of a breeze gently washing over the roughly 600 runners lined up to run the Ultimate 5K & 10K. Who are we kidding, it was hotter than #@*% but that made it even more impressive for those who finished. Over $18,000 was raised for Youth Villages and their nationally recognized programs that assist children and their families. This brings the total donated to charity to over $153,000. Thank you to all of you runners, volunteers and sponsors who make this event the success it has become.

With temperatures about 10 degrees hotter than normal for June 27th, the UPS Ultimate 5 and 10K run took place in Davies Plantation. About 650 runners signed up for the event and there were about 620 finishers. Despite the heat, the morning was a complete success with the participants surviving the run and enjoying the post race music of Social Remedy, the food and drinks, and the feeling of accomplishment you get from strenuous exercise and supporting a worthy cause. Youth Villages will receive a donation of around $18,000 from the efforts of these runners and volunteers. This brings the total amount donated to charity from this race to about $135,000.

2008

It was one minute till race time and the wind came up. A light rain started coming down when the starters horn sounded and it looked like it could be a rough run. Less than a minute into the race the rain stopped. The light breeze remained and with the temperature hovering around 70 we had the perfect race morning. About 625 runners and walkers wound  thru the neighborhood streets, assisted by about 100 volunteers, helping raise over $15,500 for the work at Youth Villages. The race has now raced over $115,000 for charity and we are well on the way to the 2nd hundred thousand.

Our new race sponsor is UPS and there were a lot of volunteers from UPS helping to infuse the race with even more energy. There was a new walkers division this year and we had a corporate challenge with a UPS team and a FedEx team. Being the good host, UPS allowed the FedEx team to take the first corporate challenge but we have it on good authority that this will not be allowed to continue.

Overall men’s winners were Rob Sorrell in the 10k with a time of 32:54 and women’s winner was Nancy Newkirk in 42:33. The 5k winners were Lucas Cotter in 17:21 in the men’s division, Shannon Wall in 21:25 for the women and Joseph Spence in 19:45 in the Wheelchair Division. Other winners and age group finishers can be found in the results section of our website.

Thanks to the Young Gun’s band that kept us entertained, all of our food sponsors, runners and volunteers. We look forward to seeing all of you again next year.
